Exchange to The University of New South Wales, Australia

First and foremost, I have to thank the Cheung Kong Group for setting up this scholarship because its generosity gave me an unforgettable and valuable life experience. With the help of the scholarship, I could fully indulge myself within the Australian culture without any worry.

As a student of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), surviving at The University of New South Wales (UNSW) was quite challenging because we were taken good care of by our home university. However, universities in Australia are more eager to train you to be independent and well-rounded. So the greatest challenge I met in Sydney was that I had to get accommodation by myself! Luckily, I met a nice Australian family and they gave me a taste of the real “Aussie” life.

Life as an exchange student was really lovely and I made friends with students from all over the world. We even traveled around Australia together. The biggest problem I had was how to make good use of my time so I could travel as much as I could!

Apart from making new friends and traveling around the country, studying at UNSW was also a great experience because of the very different academic culture from HKU. Compared to HKU students, students of UNSW enjoy much more freedom as the credits required in each semester are much less, as well as the coursework they have to do. Therefore, students can have more free time to develop their interest in either extra curricular activities or other non-academic skills, which can help them in all other aspects.

This exchange experience definitely widened my horizons and gave me a global vision, which is difficult to get by just staying at home. I returned from Australia a few weeks ago, but I really miss it, especially the good weather, so enjoy the blue sky and clean air!
