Shintaro YAMAGAMI

Student of Osaka University, Japan
Exchange to the University of Adelaide, Australia

A Wonderful Time in Australia

First of all, I really appreciate all the support from this Award, which helped make my stay full of insights. Before I started the exchange programme, I felt quite nervous, because everything was new to me, and my English was not good. Thanks to the support from this project and the university, I was able to concentrate on my academic tasks during the stay.

Because I had enough financial support from my family, I made the most of this scholarship to travel around Australia. Actually during my half-year stay, I went to over 15 museums around South Australia and Cairns! Visiting many places told me a lot of things – the history of influx of immigrants, the culture of Aborigines, and the great nature in Australia. Every single thing was new and intriguing to me. Besides my academic schedule and museum visits, I joined the Adelaide Camera Club to interact with local people and improve my photo skills. Thanks to the financial support from this Award, I could go on a trip with them to explore Hawker, South Australia. The photo is from the trip, where I saw unbelievable starry scenery in the wilderness. I also would like to say thank you to the members of the club who warmly welcomed this student with poor English from overseas.

Through this half-year project, I realised how important it is to have a different "window" through which to look at the world. Before this exchange, I only had one window, "Japanese", but now I have another window, "English". As my English becomes better, I had better relationships with people, and I had more insight. I really appreciate all the help from the Award, and I am willing to make the most of this exchange experience after graduating university. Thanks again to all the friends in Australia – and I'll be back someday!
