Tara MAY

Student of Flinders University, Australia
Exchange to Chuo University, Japan

A student exchange programme provides a fantastic opportunity to experience another culture through the safe and supportive environment of a host university. During my time in Japan, the staff and students at Chuo University were extremely welcoming and considerate, and the transition was made easy through the help of the Learn Without Borders team at Flinders University.

While attending Chuo University, I studied Geography and Sociology topics contributing to my Bachelor of Arts. I also took a Japanese language class. Chuo University provided exchange students with the opportunity to study Japanese from beginner through to advanced level. It was great to learn more about the language and practise my conversation skills with the local students and community.

Along with my studies at Chuo University, I also participated in English tutoring for the children of several local Japanese families. As a pre-service teacher, I enjoyed the opportunity to work with young people and develop my teaching skills. This also gave me an insight into the daily lives of Japanese families, their traditions and culture.

The most enjoyable aspect of participating in an overseas exchange is the variety of people you meet. I developed friendships with many wonderful people from all parts of the world, and will cherish the shared memories we hold. Chuo University students established a range of extra-curricular clubs and encouraged the international students to join. Many cultural and social events were held, which was a fun way to mingle and meet with local Japanese students.

During my exchange, I explored many local areas around Tokyo, and I was fortunate enough to travel throughout Japan. Osaka, Kyoto and Mt. Fuji were some of my favourite destinations. The picturesque view of Mt. Fuji from nearby Lake Kawaguchi was breathtaking.

Japan is a beautiful country with considerate people and a fascinating culture. I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying in Tokyo. A student exchange programme is an extremely valuable experience for both personal and educational development. My time in Japan taught me independence and confidence, and opened my eyes to the possibilities that lie ahead.
