Aidana AKYBAEVA

Student of Western Sydney University, Australia
Exchange to Meiji University, Japan

Unlike many students partaking in exchange programmes who would gather information after information about the places they will see, the customs as well as the weather, food and history of the country before they embark on their journey, I had no expectations about the living style and my pastime though I had heard about Tokyo's technological advancement and cultural features, I made it to Meiji University with the only intention to better my Japanese speaking skills.

It was out of my expectation that I underwent the biggest transformation within a short period of six months. The exchange experience taught me so much, I learned to find out what it really means to be independent, to take time away and reflect on my future ambitions and to expect the unexpected in the city that amazes you every single moment you step outside your door.

Living in a dormitory brought me close to my new roommates. Our trips to Osaka, Kyoto, Kamakura, Hakone, and Yokohama (just to mention a few) are memories I will never forget and will always be cherished as the best times of my life. Whilst studying in a modern campus building, which had spacious classrooms and a mix of Japanese and non-Japanese students as well as supportive academic staff, I had the chance to meet many international students. People from all over the world usually gather in one area (called the "international lounge") and friendships that will last for a lifetime was made in that room.

Although I did not expect much from my trip to Japan, I was so overwhelmed with joy about it and Tokyo will remain in my heart as the most beloved city. The friends you made will guide you, you would help each other by sending a parcel through the post, ordering something at a restaurant or even making you porridge when you were bedridden, just because we all stayed in this big city and you would rely on each other like a family.

My time in Japan would not have been made possible if there were no support from my university, the Australian Government and of course, the CK Group. A close Australia-Asia relationship is vital to generate opportunities between the regions. A good example is the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards, this scholarship is able to help thousands of students to experience incredible time of living and studying abroad. The Scholarship simply allows them to take the chance to study overseas and have no regrets!
