Caroline Yun TUNG

Student of Monash University, Australia
Exchange to The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Studying and living in Hong Kong presented the opportunity to gain a truly international experience. In particular, the region is unique as it is westernised as well as traditional through its Chinese heritage. The city of Hong Kong provides Australian students with the experience of living in a large metropolis, that is more complex compared that of Australian cities. Venturing out into the streets daily involved mobilising through a sea of people from various parts of the world, and below the commanding presence of towering skyscrapers, an urban setting that contrasts to the largely suburban cityscape in Australia.

My exchange not only furnished me with academic experience from a globally renowned educational institution, but equally, allowed me to develop as an individual who is empathetic of many cultures. I was lucky enough to live in an on-campus hall, where I bonded and formed friendships with many helpful and friendly local students who I continue to call my friends. Throughout my abroad experience, I made friends from almost every continent in the world, from one semester of living abroad in Hong Kong!

Hong Kong continues to be a popular destination, not only for tourism, but also for students who are seeking a culturally diverse experience abroad. I encourage those who consider exchange in Hong Kong to take full advantage of the social opportunities offered in order to strengthen their international network.

Hong Kong's central location in Asia made it a convenient base for travels in the region. It helped me fulfil a personal goal to learn about Chinese culture through travelling to Mainland China and Taiwan. Being an Australian of Chinese heritage, I felt that it was important to gain further knowledge of the culture through personal experiences, such as often being mistaken as a local.

The nightlife in Hong Kong was extremely varied and colourful. One of best memories is the first time watching Victoria Harbour's famous light show. Another highlight was the hiking (which I later learnt is a common pastime in Hong Kong) to Victoria Peak with fellow exchange students from around the world.

Importantly, my exchange experience continues to be an important chapter on a lifelong journey to become a culturally informed and responsible global citizen.

I appreciate and am very thankful to the Cheung Kong Group for selecting me to receive the Endeavour Cheung Kong Award. I have no doubt future students will benefit from their support.

M goi, thank you.
