Mariko HUARTSON

Student of Edith Cowan University, Australia
Exchange to Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan

As you can probably see from my name, I am half Japanese and half Australian. From a young age I have been interested in the Japanese language and culture, as it forms a part of my identity. My mother was kind enough to teach me various Japanese words and basic cultural traditions, however I wanted to learn more, especially to a point that I could confidently speak to my Japanese family. That was when I decided that one of my life goals was to spend at least 1 year in Japan; a goal that I am currently achieving as I write this.

With many humbled thanks to the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Award, I am able to carry out my study abroad here in Tokyo. Not only have I been given the opportunity to explore my identity, I am able to make both a contribution in strengthening the ties between Australia and Japan, and helping Japan's internationalisation movement.

So far my study abroad has been absolutely incredible to say the least. As a history minor, I am able to explore and learn the vast history of Japan, and as a Japanese major, my Japanese skills and knowledge has improved significantly to a point that I can now visit and confidently speak to my Japanese family, despite the difficulties understanding their strong dialect.

Having the opportunity to live with Japanese shakaijin (working adults of society) and other exchange students from all around the world, who are all such amazing and friendly people, has been one of the highlights of my stay so far. Not only am I learning about Japanese language and culture, I am also learning about other languages and other cultures, which I have never been exposed to before. I feel that by learning about my fellow share mates, I am making important life-long connections and friendships that would help strengthen Australia's ties with the world.

I would like to extend my appreciation to the Cheung Kong Group, Edith Cowan University, Tokyo Metropolitan University, and the Western Australian Government who have all assisted me in this one-in-a-lifetime journey. Without the support I have received, I would not have been able to go on this great adventure.

Thank you so very much.

どうもありがとうございました。
