Michael HAUGHEY

Student of University of Technology Sydney, Australia
Exchange to Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Studying overseas and potentially even working overseas, is something that I have always wanted to do. The scholarship I received definitely made it happen. I chose Singapore as there's a very high standard of living and everyone speaks English. Additionally several company headquarters for the Asia-Pacific region and highly reputable universities are located in Singapore.

NTU is very international, so making friends was easy. There were lots of exchange students from all over the place like Korea, Canada, America and Europe as well as a few Australians and a lot of people from China. I made some friends through my classes, but mostly where I was living on campus. The lecturers were great and all were fluent in English.

Alongside my studies at NTU I completed an internship with ABB Singapore where I worked on a prototype of an "energy intelligence system" which is a product for monitoring energy in industrial applications. While I was at ABB I made a lot of good friends and had the opportunity to interact with several employees of other companies. I made of lot of good contacts and expanded my professional network. Without the scholarship I wouldn't have had been presented these networking opportunities.

I would definitely consider going back to Singapore to work or engage in further studies. I highly encourage other students to engage in an exchange program as the benefits of international engagement are invaluable and may lead to improved career prospects. Learning about other cultures will alter your perception on life and understanding of others.
