XIAO Yun

Student of Peking University, China
Exchange to Flinders University, Australia

This is the end of my exchange program now, I had so much fun and precious memories in Adelaide to share. This exchange program really expanded my horizon and change my world, before this, I came to Australia only for its worlds-knowing koala and kangaroo, and the Great Barrier Reef of course, but now, this country means more than those to me. I got this chance to know the real life of Aussie, to understand how the culture is different from China, the most important thing is that I can slow down my pace here and enjoy my life every day.

It was my first time being abroad, I have to admit that the first couple days when I was here I was so scared and homesick, knowing nothing about this city and this country and feeling being isolated from the world where I came from, I cannot wait for the end of this and go home as early as I can at that time. But now, I am reluctant to leave here, I make a lot of new friends here, especially my housemates, they helped me a lot to adapt to my new life here and took me around in Adelaide to explore this coastal city.

People are so nice in Adelaide, it feels so good that when you are walking in the street, someone you don’t know would still say hello to you, and people are always willing to help you, owing to this, I adapted to the new life here very soon, and now I have already fell in love with this friendly and pretty city. I have to say this is the best decision that I made to come to Adelaide for this exchange, this is the best time I had ever.

I still remember the first tutorial class at Flinders, I had no idea what was going on; the tutor slowed down the pace to help me, and paused frequently to make sure that I can keep up with the class. After tutorial, he led me to the office of law school to get topic materials, and told me that I was not only studying law, but also studying a second language as well. I was encouraged by him, he told me to talk to him whenever I need help. This is not the only case, every tutor in my topics were all very willing to help me and encouraged me after knowing I was an exchange program student.

Learning in Adelaide is really different with what it is in my university. For most topics, we do not have tutorials or workshops, we only have lectures, I really like the teaching approach here, tutorials and workshops give us a chance to discuss, to see what we need to improve, to learn from others and to know better about what has been taught in lectures.

Thanks to the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards, I have such a unique experience to ‘explore’ the Government House of Australia, I have never thought I can get a chance to live in that gorgeous place, it was such a memorable experience. And thanks to this precious exchange experience in Australia, my oral English really improved a lot.

Now I am travelling around Australia, great thanks to the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards for giving me this marvelous opportunity.
