JIANG Zhengyi

Student of University of Wollongong, Australia
Exchange to Northeastern University, China

My choice to go to the State Key Laboratory of Rolling and Automation (RAL), Northeastern University (NEU), China for my fellowship study is to extend my research capacity of advanced manufacturing technology and development of new advanced materials, and to facilitate the collaborations for research, student and academic staff exchanges. The RAL is the only national key laboratory in rolling technology and automation in China with a number of advanced rolling mills, and also established significant collaborations worldwide in research on rolling and exchanges on students and staff to enhance its research activities, student training and collaborations internationally.

Thanks to the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards it has provided me an unprecedented opportunity to carry out my proposed study on the development of new composite materials with advanced rolling technology. It also gave me a chance to visit the highly regarded international research universities in China, including Shanghai JiaoTong University (SJTU) and Harbin Institute of Technology. This Award also helped me strengthen research ties with steel rolling industry including Baosteel and to attend international conferences such as the 16th International Symposium on Advances in Abrasive Technology and the 4th International Conference on Advances in Materials and Manufacturing Processes (ICAMMP2013). This opportunity provided the ability to establish long term relationships with international standing experts.

The experiments of composite material on the rolling mill (see photo) were successfully conducted. I have made regular meeting with the Host Supervisor and colleagues at NEU, as well as the meetings with researchers from industry such as Baosteel and from overseas including Prof. K. Manabe from Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan to discuss potential research areas and future collaboration opportunities. Significant research outcomes were obtained, including publications such as ‘Constitutive analysis for hot deformation behaviour of novel bimetal consisting of pearlitic steel and low carbon steel. Materials Science and Engineering: A, 595(2014), 1-9’, plenary talk on micro micromanufacturing of metals and composite material at the ICAMMP2013, and seminar presentation at the SJTU.
