ZHONG Liming

Swinburne University of Technology, Australia
Exchange to Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong

I have wanted to study film in Hong Kong for a long time. I was delighted when I was offered the opportunity to study film at the Hong Kong Baptist University. It was a really great experience and I enjoyed it very much!

Hong Kong was not wholly unfamiliar to me as I have visited often and can speak Cantonese. My exchange there felt like coming home. However, one of the main reasons I wanted to study in Hong Kong was so that I could learn more about Hong Kongˇ¦s film industry. I really want to work there after I graduate from university in Australia.

Although the Hong Kong Baptist University is not the best university in Hong Kong, it has the best film course. All my teachers have worked in the industry for a long time and have a lot of experience. The faculty invited famous filmmakers to speak to us regularly, and gave me and other film students a chance to meet with them and ask them questions. I met and spoke to many famous filmmakers, artists and writers while I was in Hong Kong. They have all inspired me and gave me a lot of suggestions about working in Hong Kong.

Education in Hong Kong is quite different to my home university, the Swinburne University of Technology. At Swinburne, I only made one to two films every semester, and each counted as a very big percentage in my final result. However, in Hong Kong, I had ongoing projects and needed to make films constantly. They were not big projects; just small exercises that helped you to become familiar with how to operate the camera, sound mixer and other film equipment. As I can speak Cantonese, I didn't have any difficulties during the time I studied in Hong Kong. However, all the teachers can speak English very well and are happy for you to contact them after class time if you ever need any help.

Living in Hong Kong for about half a year was a great experience. I now have a better understanding of Hong Kongˇ¦s film industry and am feeling so happy and lucky to have met so many famous filmmakers. I would really like to go back to Hong Kong again if I get a chance. Finally, I would like to thank the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards for making my journey so much more wonderful.
