Sichuan University, China
Exchange to Monash University, Australia

Studying and researching overseas had been one of my dreams for a long time. My dream finally came true in 2011 when I was offered the opportunity to go on exchange in Australia. Thanks to the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards, I was able to gain lots of research experience and get the most out of my studies in Australia.

I・m learning biological science and the reason why I chose Australia is because this country has the greatest views and the best living environment in the world. I would like to learn about Australia・s plants and animals, and for the most part, to learn about how people preserve them. During my study at Monash University, I heard about Tassie Devils. They have transferrable tumor and might become extinct in the near future. I was very sad when I heard about this and hoped to do something for them. As a result, I used my scholarship to travel to Tasmania to find more about their living conditions. Fortunately, one of my tour guides is a fan of Tassie Devils who has donated a lot of money to save them. I was moved by his love for animals.

We travelled for several days but were frustrated to only see Tassie Devils at the Reserved Zoo. Then on our last day when we were under the Cradle Mountain, we were delighted to see a small cute devil run pass. It picked up the food that we left on the stairway and disappeared. We were really excited, but unfortunately I did not manage to take a photo of it. After returning from Tasmania, I read a lot of papers about transferrable tumor. People can still not figure out how the disease transfers from one animal to another, and as a result there・s still no treatment available. The more papers I read, the stronger I felt that I had to stay in Tasmania to help save them.

I・m now looking for a PhD position related to Tassie Devils. I wish to return to Tasmania and devote my entire life to help them. We have spent too much effort learning about human cancer. It・s time for us to focus on other species. They are equal to us. I hope that Tassie Devils will receive more attention, not only in Australia, but also around the world. I would sincerely like to thank the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards for helping me find my goal as a biologist and support my living here.
