Mitchell HOUTEN

Griffith University, Australia
Exchange to University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

My decision to study at the University of Hong Kong began with a fascination with China. I had travelled there extensively and had fallen in love with the people and the culture. My studies through both my law and international relations degrees always managed to find their way back to China in some way and so I thought it was high time to experience permanent life in this society. In addition, my honours thesis centred on democratisation in the context of the Chinese ¡§one country, two systems¡¨ regime ¡V what better way to study this then in the heart of that very system ¡V Hong Kong. The Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards was vital in allowing me to engage in this experience.

The University of Hong Kong (and Hong Kong in general) is an amazing intersection between eastern and western academic tradition. There is a constant stream of internationally regarded visiting scholars, presenting on a diverse range of subjects. The subjects on offer from the University are amazingly diverse, intellectually challenging and taught in English. One of my favourite memories of my time at the University was sitting in a class called ¡¥Human Rights in China¡¦, arguing the merits of the Chinese death penalty with students from around the world, with a diverse range of backgrounds. My other subjects provided a unique insight into the judicial and legal system of Hong Kong and will provide lifelong lessons that I will take into the workforce. The university also offers extensive programs for exchange students and provides amazing support services.

Hong Kong is an amazing place to live and I would encourage any who are thinking about going on exchange to consider the destination. Not only is accommodation and food dirt cheap (and amazing ¡V dumplings NOM!), but the proximity to the rest of Asia means that you are never short of a trip to do on the weekend. Taiwan, mainland China, the Philippines and Thailand were amongst the many trips I was able to enjoy while away. Hong Kong is also full of amazing experiences. From the towering heights of the Tian Tan Budda at Po Lin monastery to the bustling streets of Nathan Road and Mong Kok, you will never be short of something to do in Hong Kong. I was also fortunate to meet some amazing people on my travels ¡V some crazy Germans, my Swiss roommate and a Japanese guy who sings the most amazing rendition of Backstreet Boys hits.

So if you are thinking about exchange studies, stop thinking and just do it. It¡¦s something that you will never forget and never regret.
