HAN Hua

Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China
Exchange to University of Technology, Sydney, Australia

I haven・t even left Australia yet, but I have already started to miss it. My name is Hua Han, an exchange student from China. I came to Australia on 17 July 2011 through an exchange program which was organized by both the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (my home university) and the University of Sydney Technology. (Many thanks to HUST and UTS for giving me this precious opportunity). Before I came to Australia, I was just one of the thousands of ordinary Chinese students. Everything I knew and learned were from a single perspective. I have always dreamed of a day when I could step outside this :circle; and experience something different. And my dream has come true because of Australia.

Life in Australia is completely different from my life in China. For example, I have never earned my own living in China. Whereas in Australia, I found myself a casual job. For the first time in my life, I don・t have to rely on my parents for financial support. What・s more, the study style here is also new to me. I am starting to get used to writing academic essays in English. I have also learnt to do independent research by myself. I enjoyed my course work a lot even though they were a little bit hard at first. I can now read more quickly and think more deeply. In addition, I made many friends from all over the world. Believe it or not, my best friend is a Spanish girl. The most amazing thing is that she is also a vegetarian and an artist. I have to say that people I encountered in Australia are super friendly and helpful. They say :G・ day; and smile to everyone even though they are strangers, giving you a good reason to be in a fantastic mood all day. I don・t know how to express my feelings, but I am grateful for this period of my life. It changed me in a subtle way and I can feel it.

Australia has made me a more open-minded and warm-hearted person. More importantly, I can now see the world from another perspective. To some extent, my exchange experience has broadened my horizons and given me a great chance to pursue a better life.
