WONG Wai Ling

University of Hong Kong
Exchange to University of Western Australia, Australia

I am glad that I had the precious opportunity to be an exchange student at The University of Western Australia. The time I had in Perth was one of the best experiences in my life. It was amazing to meet people from all over the world. I made a lot of local and international friends during my stay in Perth. I treasured the time we had together. We shared our experiences and customs in our home countries, which allowed me to know more about different cultures.

Perth is a place totally different from Hong Kong. There aren¡¦t many tall buildings in Perth. Instead, trees and birds are found everywhere. The air in Perth is very fresh. You can see many stars in the sky at night (which is impossible in Hong Kong). People in Perth know how to enjoy their life. They love to have a cup of coffee and chat with friends in coffee shops. They love to spend their weekends surfing or at the beach. The life in Perth is slow paced and relaxing. I do like the Aussie lifestyle. When I was in Perth, I enjoyed having afternoon tea with my friends and spending my weekends at the beach!

Another thing that impressed me deeply is that Aussies are very nice. I still remembered on my first day of arrival, I didn¡¦t know which stop to get off the bus at for my home stay. I passed my map to the bus driver and he was enthusiastic to guide me the way. A passenger even took me to my home stay after I got off the bus. I really want to thank them for their kindness.

The best thing for exchange students to do is to travel! I explored the beauty of Western Australia with other exchange students during our leisure time. Moreover, I spent a week in Sydney and the Gold Coast during my study break in which I could see another side of Australia. I was astonished by the beautiful scenery. I saw a lot of Australian wildlife, including kangaroos, koalas, wombats, emus, etc. I experienced so many things for the first time. It was my first time to try sand boarding in desert. It was my first time to see glow worms in caves. All these experiences are unforgettable and are once in a lifetime!

The exchange experience was rewarding and definitely a remarkable memory in my life. I would like to express my wholehearted thanks to the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards program for its generous support.
