Hing Kai Chan The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong First and foremost, I am grateful to have received the 2006 Endeavor Australia Cheung Kong Award that enabled me to spend six months conducting my research with the School of Advanced Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Australia. My stay in Australia has certainly been a memorable experience that I will not forget. In fact, this was the first time that I left my home country alone for such a long period. It is also interesting that I started my cookery experience away from home. The Award has not only allowed me to conduct part of my research in Australia, but to work with people from another lifestyle. Staff and students at the university were all helpful. It was my fortune that I met a postgraduate student who helped me find very good accommodation upon my arrival in Adelaide. He certainly made my life in Australia easier. More importantly, I was able meet friends from different parts of the world, from a wide variety of cultures. This experience helped me to polish my cultural awareness. It is not surprising that Adelaide was a city I found very quiet, as compared with Hong Kong. However, I felt that the people in the city were all kind-hearted. I can still remember how a generous lady, who was in a hurry for a meeting early one morning, helped me to find an office together for half an hour. This is something that I have not experienced in Hong Kong. I will remember every person I met in Adelaide, including the bus driver who took me from my home to the school every weekday. Finally, I would like to thank DEST and Cheung Kong for their great efforts in regard to this Award. Without their assistance, I would have been in trouble during the period I stayed in Australia. I hope that the Awards can become a tradition and more students can benefit from exchange experiences.
