Yee Man Wu, Claire

City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Exchange to Central Queensland University, Australia

From July to November 2006, I went on exchange to Central Queensland University, which is located in Rockhampton, Australia, to study for five months. During the exchange period, I learnt to be more independent. After studying abroad, I have become more mature and learnt how to take care of myself as I knew my mom would not be there and I would have no one that I could depend on. This kind of independence development training is hard to carry out in Hong Kong, and best learnt in other countries.

I truly believe that walking millions of miles is more valuable than reading millions of books. What we learn in textbooks are just theories. I would like to practice them and prove whether they are really true. After studying with students from different countries, not only have I broadened my horizons, but I have also developed my judgement skills. Now before passing comment, I will listen to point of views from different people and analyze them by myself.

After finishing my studies at Rockhampton, I traveled all around Australia. With limited resources, including money and time (as my visa was soon to expire), I had to maintain a good budget, as well as practice time management. I did a lot of preparation beforehand, bought tickets, booked hostels, looked up information on the attractions of each place, planned my itinerary etc. During this process, I practiced and greatly improved my management skills.

By taking the trip, I felt that I saw more, heard more, tasted more, and felt more about the real Australia. Australia is such an international country, enabling me to meet people from all around the world ¡V some of them were Europeans, some of them were Asians. During the trip, I came into close contact with national animals, like kangaroos and koalas, and I also learnt how to get along with different people ¡V not just people with different personalities, but also people from different countries. Yee Man WUIn a short period of time, I made many friends from all around the world. I believe this is an important kind of social skill that I can take advantage of in the future. Thanks to the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Scholarship Programme, which gave me the opportunity for such exposure. I will treasure the experience that I gained from this exchange very much.
